INDIGENOUS

Sustainable. Inspirational. Educational.
At Indigenous, we are always working our best to create a better food system. Our menu of seasonal American cuisine evolves throughout the year, shifting with the peak availability of fresh ingredients. With a focus on sustainable seafood, we partner closely with local fishermen, artisans, and farmers to ensure every dish reflects both quality and responsibility.
Located in Sarasota’s historic Towles Court district, Indigenous offers a setting as thoughtful as its food, blending charm and sophistication with indoor and outdoor dining spaces designed for comfort year-round. Since opening in 2011, the restaurant has built a reputation as one of America’s most inspiring dining destinations, recognized for its passion for food, community, and the planet. Every plate at Indigenous tells a story of respect for the environment, crafted with care to educate, inspire, and delight.

Indigenous was founded by Chef Steve Phelps, whose lifelong dedication to sustainability has earned national recognition. Originally from Cleveland, Phelps learned the fundamentals of cooking from his uncle, a classically trained chef in France and Germany. After honing his skills in Cleveland’s top restaurants, he moved to Sarasota, where he embraced the ocean’s bounty and became a leader in sustainable seafood.
Chef Phelps is a member of the Seafood Watch Blue Ribbon Task Force and a founding board member of the EDF Coalition for Sustainable Aquaculture. Twice a James Beard Foundation semi-finalist for Best Chef South, he is widely respected as an educator and advocate. Through partnerships with conservation organizations and a steadfast commitment to responsible sourcing, Indigenous continues to champion a better food system while offering guests a truly unforgettable dining experience.
